I Tried Oil-Pulling for 30 days

I tried oil-pulling for 30 days straight and this is what happened. Want to learn more about the benefits of oil-pulling and how you can help your overall mouth & body health?

What is oil-pulling?

Oil-pulling also known as “kavala” or “gundusha,” is the practice of swishing oil around the mouth, like a mouthwash, usually for reducing the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth. It has been used for thousands of years as an ancient Ayurvedic technique. Some articles I’ve read regarded it as the oldest form of dental health. There are claims that it can help overall wellness. Teeth are thought to connect through root systems that actually affect the body much deeper than you think! With oil pulling, the microflora in the mouth restores its balance while acting on the toxins that have already accumulated in the body for a period of time. This results in having a body that is detoxified and rejuvenated.

One of the main bacteria in your mouth, called streptococcus mutans is a key player in plaque buildup and tooth decay. One study in 60 adults showed that oil pulling with coconut oil for 10 minutes every day significantly reduced the number of bacteria.

How do I oil-pull?

As soon as you wake up each morning — yes even before taking a drink or brushing your teeth — swish one tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. That’s it! So easy. To kill the time I usually meditate, do my daily readings, and water my plants.

What kind of coconut oil should I use when oil-pulling?

Honestly, use the best kind you can get. Unrefined extra-virgin coconut oil is a popular choice. It has a favorable fatty acid profile that contains high amounts of lauric acid which is an antimicrobial property.

What are the benefits of oil-pulling?

These are the benefits I have personally experienced. Unless you are following my complete health and lifestyle choices I cannot promise that you will have the same experience but I can tell you I have improved in all these areas.

  1. Whiter teeth
I have had friends ask me “What are you doing? Your teeth are so white!” Which is crazy. I smoked for 14 years, I drink a lot of coffee. I don’t do any whitening regimes. But I quit smoking and tried oil-pulling. Much. Whiter. Teeth!
  2. Better breath
I have noticed morning breath is literally non-existent! Just a healthy clean mouth with no dry buildup.
  3. Stronger teeth and gums
I have very sensitive teeth and gums. They are weak and chip and I even avoid biting into hard foods. Somehow I feel my teeth stronger. My gums aren’t bleeding.
  4. Less sinus & gum pain
I have had this dry sinus pain for years. It is received with a humidifier sometimes but it is a painful pressure in my gums above my teeth. Ever since oil pulling that pain has been gone. I haven’t even had to use a humidifier!
  5. Skin Imperfections
My skin has cleared up! I have suffered from adult cystic and hormonal acne since I was 24. It could be from a bunch of things (I have quit smoking, vaping, drinking, and started following a keto diet which have also all helped).
  6. Psoriasis
I took a couple weeks off oil pulling when I got sick and my psoriasis on my head FLARED UP. I recently started oil-pulling again and now I have some relief again! It’s unbelievable.

Do you want to try oil-pulling? Have you tried? Let me know in the comments.
